Our local A Better Chance chapter is managed by a board of directors, but also counts on the interest and dedication of many volunteers from the community. Some of these opportunities involve a commitment for much of the year, while others entail a brief stint organizing something specific. If you’d like to help out or know someone who would, please let us know by contacting a board member.

Board Committees Include:

  • Development Committee (oversees fundraising initiatives)
  • House Committee (focuses on the scholars and whatever they need to be successful)
  • Facilities Committee (works to ensure that our facility is maintained well)
  • Finance Committee (handles our yearly budgeting process and long term financial sustainability)

Drivers

Other volunteer needs include drivers, host families, academic advisors, assistance with college applications/essays, cooking, event planning, volunteer coordination and more.

ABC students are not permitted to have cars, but like all high school students, they need transportation to and from school activities and doctor’s appointments. A list of local residents who are willing to drive students during the week is posted in the ABC house.

If you are interested in becoming an ABC volunteer driver, please contact a House Committee Co-Chair Morgan Shankweiler at morganshankweiler@gmail.com or Rachel Ginzberg at drginzberg@gmail.com.

Host Families

Each student is assigned to a host family. Students spend alternate Sundays with their families, who have volunteered to welcome the students into their homes. These families will be sharing their regular activities from 1 pm until 7 pm. This gives the student a chance to be on his/her own and to develop a special relationship with a family in the Wallingford-Swarthmore community. Students often bond very closely with their host families and when alumni return, it is usually to visit the host family.

If you are interested in becoming a Host Family, please contact Mary Murry atmogorman220@comcast.net

Academic Advisors

Each student in the ABC program gets an Academic Advisor who stays with him/her for all four years at Strath Haven High School. The Academic Advisor acts as the “academic parent” for the student, knows the student’s strengths and weaknesses best, and can advocate for the student with the school. Academic Advisors meet weekly with students, and communicate regularly with Resident Directors, tutors, and parents.

If you are interested in becoming an Academic Advisor, please contact Micelle Midget at mkrista72@hotmail.com.

Want To Help Give Our Scholars A Better Chance?

Here’s How:

Make a Gift in Support of Our Scholars!  Each year, A Better Chance Strath Haven must raise over $100,000 in order to provide our scholars with housing, food, medical insurance, academic support, and costs associated with student activities such as proms, trips, athletic equipment/uniforms, and more.  As a Community Scholar Program of the national A Better Chance program, we receive no funding from ABC national.  We rely on individual gifts and grants in order to sustain our program.

Please support this worthy program with a tax-deductible contribution.  Checks made out to ABC Strath Haven may be sent to:
