Spotlight on ABC Scholars
Here are some comments by current ABC Scholars on themselves, the program and their studies at Strath Haven High School.
Esly, from Brooklyn, N.Y. 9th grade
When I came to visit, I felt that it was where I belonged. Everybody seemed welcoming and loving. My favorite subject in school is English. I love how deep my teacher, Mrs. Scott, gets into the subject.
Darren, from New York City (“Harlem World”). 11th grade
Some of the things I really like about the program are the communication and coming together of the house, the good schooling at Strath Haven, and the preparation for college life. I’ve seen many changes in myself since coming to ABC. I am more “responsible,” and I feel that I’ve learned to interact with others better.
Gabrielle, from Brooklyn, N.Y. 10th grade.
The thing that most surprised me when I got here was the unusual number of squirrels running around. Since coming her, I have definitely become more independent and reliable. I feel that I have matured and have developed new opinions and perspectives. ABC Strath Haven does something to you while you’re here. You may not notice it as you first step in the door, but you eventually will.
Bryan, from the Bronx, N.Y. 12th grade.
Strath Haven sounded like the best ABC program, and when I came for a visit I was amazed. The things that impressed me the most were the tight-knit community atmosphere and the sports. I play rugby and lacrosse at Strath Haven. Those sports let me show off my two toughest attributes, running and hitting.
Ramin, from Brooklyn, N.Y. 10th grade
I come from a pretty bad neighborhood. When my parents heard about the program, they told me it was a great opportunity for my education. It was a huge culture shock to come here, but now I’m a lot more confident. I’m much more relaxed and independent, and also more responsible. I like to play football and basketball with the ABC boysit gives me a challenge.
Travis, from Hartford, Conn. 10th grade
I really enjoy the neighborhood the Boys’ House is in. My favorite subject is math, and my favorite activity is football, where I play linebacker and fullback. Since coming to ABC, I have become a stronger person, both mentally and physically.
Daisya, from the Bronx., N.Y. 10th grade
My favorite activity is cheerleading and my favorite subject is math. I enjoy living in Swarthmorethe town is pleasant and comfortable.
Shawnelle, from Brooklyn, N.Y. 12th grade
I chose this program because when I came to visit, the people were so friendly and welcoming. They really made me feel at home and safe. The thing that surprised me the most was how quiet Swarthmore is.
NeShae´, from Washington, D.C. 9th grade
I chose this program because I thought it would be an excellent experience and I believed I was ready for a challenge.
