Letter from the President-August 2007
Dear Friends,
When asked to describe ABC, I have to start with “the kids.” ABC Strath Haven has for thirty years been providing scholarships and support to scores of worthy students. They come to our program from all over the country and from varied backgrounds and experiences, but they come with the common goal of gaining a great secondary education and preparing themselves to advance on to college and a successful and rewarding life. Please browse through this website and get an idea of some of their successes.
As successful as the program has been over these many years, each year brings us new students, new staff, new board members and new challenges. We strive to sustain a program of 16 academically talented scholars from minority backgrounds. Our commitment to the students continues for their four years of high school, throughout the college application processes, and often extends to helping them find summer programs to enrich their experience. This commitment takes money, time, and a wide base of community support. I hope that your having reached our website is an indication that you may have a desire to help us with this undertaking.
The Wallingford-Swarthmore School District has made an incredible contribution to the ABC Strath Haven scholars, as have many others in the community who contribute as host families, academic advisers, grant writers, fundraisers, drivers, public relations specialists, luminaria assemblers, cookie bakers, and a raft of other jobs.
So, describing ABC starts with “the kids,” but invariably leads to “the community” - people who have given their support generously and have created a vibrant and inclusive community.
Sincerely,
Chris Darrell
President
ABC Strath Haven
